Despite lackluster numbers at the box office Grindhouse is worth the price of admission. If you are a fan of an event movie, Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez then this is a must see. One of the reaons in my mind that this film may have not performed well is that it was 3 hours and 11 minutes long. This means that theatres cant play it every thirty minutes resulting in less shows. This factor in addition to the fact that this was Easter weekend and the family friendly fare had a definite presence. It also did not hurt "Are We Done Yet?" to have opened on Wednesday plus offer more showings. This movie took me back to my times of watching USA's Up All Night with host Linea Quigley where she showed B horror movies that were almost laughable. Grindhouse is definitely laughable but takes you through a wide array of emotions with a lot of laughing and shock.
The film is actually two movies in one. Planet Terror is a zombie film and Death Proof is about a murdering stunt driver played by Kurt Russell. Planet Terror, directed by Robert Rodriguez is an homage to zombie films with lots of gore and violence and characters that you want to root for but know most of them will not make it. The action is over-the-top and the script purposefully cheesy. Blood erupts from the gunshots like a volcano. Usually each squib in a typical action film with lots of gun play has less than half the blood these squibs had. I loved the use of effects to make the film look choppy and gnarled from multiple viewings but felt at points it got a little annoying. There are parts where there are missing reels that are intentionally there as well. All I can hope for is that these reels will be shown on the unrated mega DVD that I am hoping for.
Death Proof is a car, sexy women, foot(see it to understand), vigilante lovers dream come true. Directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Kurt Russell, who does some of his best work in a long time in this film. He takes us through a wide range of emotions and at points I was scared of him and other moments scared for him. Parts of this film had me saying OH MY and JEEZ out loud in the theatre.
Between the films there are some very cool previews for fake coming attractions that were directed by Rob Zombie and Eli Roth that are awesome. The whole package and concept of this film is awesome so it is worth checking out. You will definitely leave the theatre energized and excited and ready to chat about the film with someone.
